The DW Stadium opened in August 1999 and is the current home of rugby league side Wigan Warriors and football club Wigan Athletic. It has a maximum capacity of 25,138 and is made up of 4 main stands including an Italian restaurant called Rigalettos which is located within the stadium.

History

4 stands make up the ground and are called: the Boston Stand, Springfield Stand, South Stand and North Stand. The Boston Stand faces the east and usually occupies the home fans during Wigan Athletic matches with a capacity of 8,238. It was named after former rugby league player Billy Boston and has an electronic scoreboard.

The Springfield Stand faces the west and is where the majority of the stadium’s facilities are located. It has four changing rooms, benches, treatment room and a doping control room which is where the players will spend their time before and after a game. There is also four executive boxes, a TV studio and numerous radio commentary areas. The capacity of this stand is 6,100.

Behind the goal on the South Stand, a maximum of 5,400 home fans can sit for sporting events whereas opposite in the North Stand there are 5,400 away seats behind the opposite goal.

9 rugby league International matches have taken place at the DW Stadium with Great Britain playing 6 times and England playing 3 matches. Great Britain has played Australia 4 times and New Zealand twice with a win rate of 50%. England played 3 games themselves beating New Zealand and France, however, losing to Australia with all 3 games being played between the years of 2009 and 2015.

4 World Club Challenge matches have been played at the ground which is played by the winner of the Australian NRL and the English Super League. These games took place in 2000, 2011, 2015 and 2016.
