The Principality Stadium is the home of the Welsh National Rugby team which is located in Cardiff, Wales. The stadium opened in 1999 ahead of the 1999 Rugby World Cup at a cost of £121 million, it is the largest stadium in Wales and the second largest covered stadium in the world.

History

Wales play their home matches at the Principality Stadium and it’s regarded as one of the best rugby atmospheres in the world. It’s held 19 Rugby World Cup matches including the final in 1999 which was contested between Australia and France.

Five Rugby League matches have been held at the ground between 2000 and 2013 including the Cook Islands vs Lebanon, two fixtures of Wales vs New Zealand, Australia vs England and Wales vs Italy. The latter two games took place in the 2013 Rugby League World Cup which was held in England, Wales, Ireland and France.

Wales’ National football team play some of their games at the ground, however, play the majority of their fixtures at Cardiff City stadium. Some competitions that have been played at the Principality Stadium are the FA Cup Final, League Cup Final, Football League Trophy Final, Football League play-off Finals and the FA Community Shield.

Anthony Joshua has had two boxing matches in the stadium by beating Carlos Takam by TKO and Joseph Parker on points. Welshman Joe Calzaghe has fought twice at the ground in 2007 by beating Peter Manfredo and Mikkel Kessler in world title fights. The first fight at the ground saw Matt Skelton beat Danny Williams to win the Commonwealth Heavyweight title.

Some artists that have performed at the stadium include Paul McCartney, Bon Jovi, R.E.M, Eric Clapton, Manic Street Preachers, Neil Diamond, U2, Madonna, Robbie Williams, The Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Tina Turner, Stereophonics and Oasis.
