The FNB Stadium is located in Johannesburg, South Africa and is the home of football club Kaizer Chiefs, the South African national football team and the South Africa national rugby union team. The ground has a capacity of 94,736 which opened in 1989 at a cost of £320 million. In 2009, the stadium was renovated in order to increase the capacity, new facilities and new floodlights for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

History

In 2010, the FNB Stadium hosted 8 games in the FIFA World Cup including the final between Spain and the Netherlands. Other sides that played at the ground during the tournament were South Africa, Mexico, Denmark, South Korea, Argentina, Brazil, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Germany and Uruguay.

Ten matches in the 1996 African Cup of Nations were played at the ground including a quarterfinal, semifinal and third-place match along with the final which saw South Africa beat Tunisia 2-0. The FNB Stadium held three games in the 2013 edition of the tournament too including the opening match South Africa vs Cape Verde, Angola vs Morocco and the final where Nigeria beat Burkina Faso 1-0.

In 2018, South African side Mamelodi Sundowns played FC Barcelona at the stadium in a centenary match in honour of the late former president of the country, however, Barcelona won the match 3-1.

The Kaizer Chiefs play their home matches in the FNB Stadium as does the Soweto derby which is played between the Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. In one of these derby matches in 2017, 2 people were killed and 17 were injured due to uncontrolled crowds and a stampede.

Four Christian gatherings have taken place between the years of 2011 and 2018 which gather attendances of over 100,000 on each occasion. Artists that have performed at the ground are U2, Neil Diamond, Coldplay, Kings of Leon, The Eagles, Lady Gaga, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Bon Jovi, Justin Bieber and Rihanna.
