The John Smith’s Stadium is the home of football team Huddersfield Town and rugby league side Huddersfield Giants. The ground has a capacity of 24,121 and was opened in 1994 under the ownership of Kirklees Metropolitan Council, Huddersfield Town and Huddersfield Giants. Today, Huddersfield Town AFC own the majority of the stadium following their acquisition of Huddersfield Sporting Pride’s shares.

History

The ground is made up of 4 stands: the North Stand, East Stand, South Stand and West Stand. In the North Stand, you have 16 hospitality boxes along with two tiers of fully seated areas. Opposite, you have the South Stand which is named the John Smiths South Stand and is where away fans are usually seated which also has a big screen.

The East Stand has only one tier of 7,000 fans and holds the TV gantry with the West Stand on the opposite side having two tiers, 26 hospitality boxes, tunnel, benches, changing room, ticket office and club shop.

One notable football match that took place in the stadium was England vs Sweden in the 2000 UEFA European Under 21’s Championship. A record attendance FA Cup match between Huddersfield Town and Manchester City occurred in 2017 which brought in 24,129 fans.

Eleven International rugby league games have taken place at the stadium with Great Britain, New Zealand, Australia, England, Exiles RL and Ireland all making appearances at the John Smith’s Stadium. Four International rugby union matches have also taken place at the stadium including England vs the Netherlands in a world cup qualifying match and New Zealand vs Italy in the 1999 Rugby World Cup.

Concerts that have taken place at the stadium are R.E.M, The Eagles, Bryan Adams, The Beautiful, Bon Jovi, Blue, Girls Aloud, Darius, Elton John, Lulu, Little Mix, Take That, Green Day, Weezer and Fall Out Boy.
