History

It’s been held for University varsity matches between De Montfort University and Leicester University and has been an annual tradition since 2002 for the Mens game and 2004 for the Womens game. James Morrison and Will Young have both performed at Welford Road on the 15th and 16th of July 2010 respectively.

The stadium also held the Super League IX with Hull FC beating the London Broncos 42-26. An American Football match also took place at Welford Road in a charity match in aid of Matt Hampson who became paralysed from the neck down after a scrummaging accident. The game saw Loughborough University Aces take on the Leicester Panthers who reunited from the 90’s. Leicester Falcons beat the Birmingham Bulls 22-15 in June 2010 in the second American Football game at the ground.

The ground hosts England Saxons and England u20 games regularly and also held pool matches in the 1991 and 1999 Rugby World Cups. The RFU controversially decided not to choose Welford Road as a Rugby World Cup 2015 venue with the King Power Stadium being opted for instead.

England have played in the stadium 5 times against Ireland 3 times and Wales and France once in friendlies and Home Nations matches. In October 1924, Leicester played against New Zealand on their tour as 35,000 fans attended making it the highest attendance at Welford Road.
